Yumichika's most striking feature is his colorful feathers on the right side of his face. He thinks he is very beautiful and tends to judge others by their physical appearance. He is in the 5th seat of the 11th division, even though he is capable of fighting at a level of or beyond most lieutenants. He chose this seat because the 3rd seat was already taken by his friend, Ikkaku, and he does not consider 4 to be a beautiful number.

Despite his apparent vanity, Yumichika loves to fight, like all the members of the 11th division. The name of his zanpakuto is Fujikujaku; it transforms into its shikai form when he commands "bloom." In its shikai, Fujikujaku is a sickle-shaped blade, which can also split into four identical blades. Fujikujaku is a kido-type sword and has the special ability of draining other people's spirit energy. Yumichika uses this ability during his fight with Hisagi.

Yumichika is very close friends with his fellow 11th division member, Madarame Ikkaku. They met before becoming shinigami in Rukongai. During that time, Yumichika had a hime cut and wore a floral-patterned yukata. He and Ikkaku also met Zaraki Kenpachi while looking for fights in Rukongai. The two later joined the 11th division of Gotei 13 after discovering that Kenpachi had become the captain.
