Yami no Matsuei is about Shinigamis; they are once humans with strong attachments to the world whom are reborn after death, given new bodies and a new life. Some of them take the job of becoming an agent of death, and their job is to gather lost souls to the afterlife.
The story of Yami no Matsuei, however, revolves around a young Asato Tsuzuki; although the oldest emloyee of the Summons Division, is also the least favorite. He is dorky, happy-go-lucky, loves sweets particularly cinnamon to the point of spending so much money on food, and the very employee who is having difficulties finding a partner (since Shinigamis are required to work in pairs) because no one wants to.
It begins with Tsuzuki finally getting a partner that may stay with him, a 16-year-old stubborn and serious empath, Kurosaki Hisoka. The two didn't work well with each other at all, until the story unfolds of a mysterious menace—Dr. Muraki Kazutaka. As they go through cases and occasionally meet up with Muraki (especially where crimes are present), the two grew closer together even though Tsuzuki himself is a keeper of a past that he choses never to reveal and may just be repeated all over again.
